American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT) has become a private company following its US$6.3 billion takeover.

First announced in May, the multinational corporate travel and meetings and events business received shareholder approval for its acquisition by the young artificial intelligence company Long Lake in early August.

“This milestone brings Long Lake’s leading AI engineering team into Amex GBT, accelerating the pace at which we shape the future of managed travel,” said Amex GBT CEO, Paul Abbott.

“From agentic customer tools to AI-empowered travel counsellors, our customers can expect continuous innovation that will make the service they already trust faster, smarter and more personalised.”

Amex GBT has already stopped trading on the New York Stock Exchange, from which it will be de-listed.

“For over a century, Amex GBT has earned the trust of the world’s most important companies, governments and institutions, by showing up for millions of travellers in mission-critical moments,” said Long Lake’s co-founder and CEO, Alex Taubman.

“It is an honour for Long Lake to have the opportunity to partner with Amex GBT to double down on its world-class customer excellence and to invest heavily to advance the frontier of AI deployment in the travel experience.”

Amex GBT is one of the biggest players in corporate travel in the USA and has a presence in Australia.

Prior to its own acquisition, Amex GBT acquired one of its biggest competitors, CWT, which also has a meetings and events arm, finalising the transaction in September last year.
