John Burke, the man at the helm of the major Malaysian business events venue, has joined the global convention centre association board.

Burke and two other new faces have just been appointed to the board of the International Association of Convention Centres (AIPC).

“This role offers a valuable platform to collaborate with global peers in shaping the future of convention centres, while highlighting the strengths of Malaysia and Asia Pacific on the world stage,” said Burke.

“I look forward to exchanging regional best practices to elevate standards across our venues and further position Kuala Lumpur and the region as leading hubs for international business events.”

Burke has been general manager of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre since March 2023, when he took over the top job from a supposedly retiring Alan Pryor, who is now GM of Exhibition World Bahrain.

Other new faces on the AIPC board are Maurits van der Sluis, chief operating officer for RAI Amsterdam, and Greg Newton, general manager of BMO Centre at The Calgary Stampede.

They join continuing board members, Julianne Jammers, managing director of SwissTech Convention Center, Taubie Motlhabane, CEO of Cape Town International Convention Centre, Ross Steele, GM of Te Pae Christchurch, and Gabor Ganczer, CEO of HUNGEXPO in Budapest, Hungary.

Jammers is president of the board, while Motlhabane is vice president, and the Australian Steele – currently flying the flag for New Zealand – is treasurer.

The three board members departing are Greg O’Dell, president of venue management at Oak View Group in Washington DC, Christian Folden Lund, CEO of Bellagroup in Copenhagen, and Panittha Buri, vice chair of the Bhiraj Buri Group in Thailand.
