The association is more than 100 years old and the Melbourne event will be its 105th session, but the first time it has been hosted in the Victorian capital.
To secure the event for Melbourne, the Melbourne Convention Bureau worked with the global association alongside locals Professor Eric Reynolds AO from the Melbourne Dental School at the University of Melbourne and Associate Professor Neil Hewson, the current interim CEO of the Victorian branch of the Australian Dental Association.
The bid also had the support of the state government.
The most recent iteration of the IADR’s General Session, held in Barcelona in June, had more than 4,500 attendees from 96 countries and regions, more than 350 oral presentations and over 2,500 poster presentations.
Thousands of delegates are expected to attend the event when it comes to Melbourne.
“Our mission is to advance research for the improvement of oral health worldwide, and Melbourne offers an exceptional setting for that pursuit,” said IADR chief executive, Christopher Fox.
“Hosting our 105th IADR General Session here will unite leading scientists, clinicians and innovators to share discoveries that benefit communities across the globe.”
Victoria’s tourism and major events minister, Steve Dimopoulos, said Victoria is “ideally positioned” to host the event.
“Our world-class research institutions and cutting edge facilities make Melbourne a natural choice,” said Dimopoulos.
“Securing this event will not only bring top dental scientists from around the globe but also deliver a significant boost to our visitor economy, creating jobs and showcasing Victoria as a global capital for health innovation.”
The event will be held at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC).
