The hotel is set to stay open through the staged refurbishment, which will run through to late next year.
The transformation of the hotel will see the guest room count rise from 319 to 324, with rooms, meeting spaces, dining venues, the lobby and the pool deck all in line for upgrades.
The renovation will see a couple of new dining options introduced, including an Argentinian grill and a small Italian pasta and wine bar.
Club InterContinental will also move to a new floor as part of the refurbishment.
IHG says guest rooms will be furnished in a mid-century style, with warm neutrals, natural stone, marble, dark timber, geometric patterns, soft curves and sculptural art all part of the new look.
Design firm Woods Bagot is leading the redesign, following on from their work on the major transformation of InterContinental Sydney and the upgrade of the Crowne Plaza in Coogee into the InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach.
“InterContinental Brisbane presented an opportunity to celebrate and evolve the building’s architectural legacy, creating a hotel experience that feels contemporary and yet remains true to the integrity of its original design,” said Woods Bagot principal, Tracey Wiles.
Harry Seidler was the original architect of the building in which the hotel is located, just off Queen St Mall, and had a major influence on architecture in Australia in his time.
“Seidler’s legacy provided a framework for both clarity and rigour, while Brisbane’s subtropical character allowed us to overlay warmth, lightness and a sense of ease, resulting in an experience that is sophisticated, welcoming and distinctly modern,” said Wiles.
Intercontinental Brisbane’s general manager, Shaun Parsons, said the renovation would combine “exceptional design, approachable luxury and culturally rich experiences that reflect Brisbane’s vibrant spirit”.
“This transformation marks a defining new chapter for InterContinental Brisbane and will set a new benchmark for luxury hospitality in the city,” said Parsons.
