Home economics world congress bound for Wellington
The World Congress of the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE) will be held in New Zealand for the first time in 2028.

The event will be held at Tākina, Wellington’s first purpose-built major convention centre, which opened last June.

The conference is anticipated to attract over 700 experts in home economics and related fields, including from academia, community services, agricultural extension, businesses, government and health services.

With support from Business Events Wellington and Tourism New Zealand Business Events, the successful bid was led by Sarah Wirth, head of technology at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School in Wellington. Wirth is also the vice president of IFHE Pacific and an executive member of the Home Economics and Technology Teachers’ Association of New Zealand (HETTANZ).

Wellington was selected on account of its thriving culinary scene and innovation in textiles and sustainable practices. Public events in New Zealand’s capital, including Wellington on a Plate and World of Wearable Art are existing demonstrations of these strengths.

“We are excited to present New Zealand as a hub for visionary approaches in home economics,” said Wirth.

“This congress will not only showcase our nation’s entrepreneurial spirit and talent but also reaffirm our commitment to global sustainability and inclusive development.”

IFHE 2028 will see the conference return to Australasia for the first time in 16 years, with the event last held in the region in 2012, when Melbourne hosted.

“It’s fantastic to be able to host a world congress of this scale and nature in Wellington, at our new convention centre, Tākina,” said Business Events Wellington manager Irette Ferreira.

“We look forward to welcoming home economists from around the world to share their knowledge and showcase Aotearoa New Zealand’s expertise in 2028.”
