The airport’s 20-year development plan includes more hotel rooms and new event space.

The Commonwealth Government has approved the master plan which will see significant changes within the airport precinct.

“Receiving approval for the master plan marks an exciting step forward in delivering a future-focused precinct that generates significant health, employment and social outcomes for our surrounding communities,” said Amelia Evans, CEO of Queensland Airports Limited, which owns and operates Gold Coast Airport.

“Our forecasts project 13 million passengers will pass through the airport annually by 2044 – that’s more than double our current passenger figures.

“We are a crucial value driver for the region and proudly play an important role in the economic vitality of southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales.”

Development outlined in the master plan includes a new public plaza with public transport integrated – a light rail stop at the airport is in the works – and an expansion of the Southern Cross University campus that is adjacent to the airport, alongside new commercial space, a new hotel and more event spaces.

A new hotel of approximately 150 rooms is proposed for the land directly opposite the 192-room Rydges that opened in 2020. According to the master plan, the intention is to develop the hotel before the Brisbane Olympic Games in 2032.

In another part of the precinct, a “Gateway Campus” is slated, offering 5,000m2 of floor space for commercial enterprise and events, bringing together innovation, tech, startups and meeting space. The Gateway Campus is scheduled for development in the second half of the 20-year period.

“The mixed-use precinct will create a vibrant destination for people to work, relax, shop and connect,” said Evans.

“Our vision extends beyond being just an airport – we aim to be a destination in our own right.”
