A new vocational training course specifically for business events will start training the industry’s emerging talent pool next month.

Te Haeata, the New Zealand Certificate in Business Events Level 4 was developed through a partnership between industry body Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA), ServiceIQ, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and Grow Tourism.

The qualification sits within the country’s existing New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework and offers a smoother route into business events for those employed in organisations across New Zealand.

In 2027, the first part of the qualification will be made available to high school students.

“Te Haeata provides a structured pathway for people entering or progressing within the business events sector to grow their knowledge and understanding, while helping employers develop the skills and capability required to support industry growth,” said BEIA chief executive Lisa Hopkins.

“As the sector continues to grow and deliver increasing economic and knowledge value to New Zealand, developing a skilled and capable workforce is essential to sustain this growth.

“Te Haeata aims to do just this. It’s developed for industry, by industry, and [it’s] designed to support the next generation of business events professionals and strengthen overall capability across our sector.”

The course combines on-the-job training with online learning and can take up to a year to complete. The first intake of students will begin their studies in April.

The qualification supports Piata Mai, New Zealand’s national statement of strategic direction for the business events industry, also overseen by BEIA on behalf of the industry. Part of Piata Mai’s focus is the resilience of the business events sector, including its talent pool and talent pipeline.

While the Te Haeata qualification is owned by BEIA, it will be managed operationally by ServiceIQ and certified by the NZQA.
