Easy access is proving advantageous for conferences in Wellington

Wellington’s appeal as a conference destination is growing, bolstered by its new convention centre. But it’s also the easy access into the city and the right people that’s ticking the boxes for organisers.

What often surprises planners is how easy it is to fly into Wellington. There are more than 50 direct return flights every week between Wellington and Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Upon arrival, it’s only a short trip from Wellington Airport to the city’s venues and hotels.

Ashley Clemmett, organiser of The Advantage Conference held at Wellington’s convention centre, Tākina, in September, highlighted the ease of access from various Australian locations.

“Having direct flights into Wellington made it so easy for our delegates to come here,” he noted.

Wellington’s access to key decision makers is also attracting conference organisers.

As New Zealand’s seat of government, the city hosts numerous central government agencies and industry associations. Often described as the nation’s intellectual capital, it boasts the largest research, science and innovation workforce in New Zealand.

This means conferences can have the nation’s change-makers at the table – from government representatives to industry leaders.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) chose Wellington for its combined Australia and New Zealand annual scientific meeting at Tākina in October.

The city’s central location facilitated networking and collaboration, making it an ideal backdrop for engaging with policymakers and the vibrant women’s health community.

“Many healthcare leaders and decision makers in healthcare [are] located here in Wellington. Having the conference [in Wellington] makes it really easy for them to be here,” said Dr Pelle Kempe, RANZCOG organising chair.

Business Events Wellington (BEW) serves as the region’s convention bureau, providing insider industry connections and support. BEW offers financial assistance, venue selection, delegate promotion resources and impartial advice throughout the entire planning process.
