“While this is positive news, industry had hoped to see a longer-term commitment extending across the next decade,” said VTIC CEO Lisa Petroni.
Patroni said the 2027 confirmation provides welcome certainty for the immediate future but noted the airshow’s significant economic value to Victoria warrants a stronger long-term commitment from the state government.
“This event is an important part of Victoria’s major events portfolio and, importantly, the largest major event held in regional Victoria,” she said.
“With the recent loss of the MotoGP in Phillip Island, we simply cannot afford to risk losing another cornerstone regional event.”
The biennial airshow has been held at Avalon Airport near Geelong since 1992.
In 2025 it attracted more than 200,000 attendees over six days, with elements for both aviation stakeholders and the general public.
Over 900 companies exhibited in the show’s exhibition with 291 delegations from 43 countries attending the trade event.
Overall, the 2025 airshow contributed an estimated $240.9 million to Victoria’s economy and was also a significant event for Geelong, delivering an estimated $31.85 million in direct benefits to the regional city.
Patroni said consistent and forward-looking investment was needed to ensure Victoria’s major event reputation continued.
“Victoria’s major events success has been built over decades. To protect that legacy, we need to ensure our hallmark events receive the certainty and support required to stay here and continue to grow.”
She also suggested that the airshow could broaden its presence in Geelong.
“There is real potential to diversify the airshow’s offering, including exploring opportunities along the Geelong waterfront.
“With the opening of the Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre this year, we now have outstanding new facilities that could support elements of the trade program and enhance the visitor experience.”
Avalon International Airshow 2027 is scheduled to run from February 23 to 28. The first three days are trade only, with public access from noon on February 26 through February 28.
