Previously announced seasonal flights between Christchurch and Singapore are to run year-round.

Direct Christchurch-Singapore flights on Air New Zealand began last week and were originally announced as part of a seasonal schedule, running only until February next year.

“Singapore is an important gateway for South Islanders, making it easier to explore more of the world while opening another door for international visitors to discover everything the South Island has to offer,” Air New Zealand chief executive, Nikhil Ravishankar.

“There’s real momentum building in Christchurch, and we’re proud to be playing our part in the South Island’s growth.”

The service will make it easier for delegates from Asia and Europe to attend conferences at Christchurch’s young convention centre, Te Pae, which opened in 2022.

The airline has also announced a seasonal service between Christchurch and Bali for next winter.

The Christchurch-Bali service will run three times a week until the end of August 2027. It is not clear exactly when it winter it will begin.

The service could prompt a rise in outbound incentives to the Indonesian destination. With Bali a strong performer for international conferences, the flights will also make it easier for Christchurch delegates to travel to congresses in Bali.

“Christchurch is an important part of Air New Zealand’s future, and these new routes reflect the confidence we have here and the opportunities ahead for the South Island,” said Ravishankar.

“More flights and more destinations mean more choice.

“The South Island has enormous potential, and better international connections help unlock that. They bring visitors into the region, support local businesses, and make it easier for South Islanders to connect with the world.

“We’re being deliberate about where we grow, and our partnership with Christchurch Airport is helping us build a stronger international network that will deliver benefits for the region over the long term,” he said.

Both the extension of the Singapore flights and the new Bali service remain subject to approval from regulators and airports.
