A second hotel is on the way for Howard Smith Wharves, alongside several other changes to the riverside precinct.

First announced in September 2024, the development application for a significant transformation of Howard Smith Wharves has now been approved, with completion of the major works expected before Brisbane hosts the Olympic Games in 2032.

As part of the upgrades to Howard Smith Wharves, a 106-room hotel will be built – offering a significantly higher room count than was originally planned.

There are also major changes set for Felons Barrel Hall, which will feature a permanent stage and a flat floor space and look to draw large-scale events.

Outdoor public space within the Howard Smith Wharves precinct will grow by 8,500m2 as a result of the development.

The transformation will also yield Brisbane’s first over river pool alongside new “cascading” riverfront stairs connecting Howard Smith Wharves to the river, and a redesigned river pontoon which will provide new access to the river, including for private vessels.

“Brisbane is a city on the rise, and Howard Smith Wharves is proud to be part of that story,” said Howard Smith Wharves CEO Luke Fraser.

“Every decision we’ve made in designing HSW has been guided by asking: how do we create something that Brisbane will be proud to show the world in 2032 and for decades beyond.”

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner called Howard Smith Wharves “one of Australia’s great urban transformations”.

“Many years ago, people saw a derelict wharf, but we saw the possibilities and so we partnered with the private sector to bring it to life,” said Schrinner.

“This next stage takes Howard Smith Wharves to another level, with more jobs, more to see and do, more hotel rooms and more of what makes Brisbane Australia’s lifestyle capital.”

As far as Howard Smith Wharves’ business events capabilities go, a spokesperson for the precinct told micenet: “Howard Smith Wharves are focused on creating event spaces that get utilised in unique and exciting ways. As we bring to life the next stage of Howard Smith Wharves these opportunities will emerge and we look forward to sharing and working with everyone in the industry.”

As it is now, the precinct offers several event spaces.
