Master Certification is given to those organisations who have improved their sustainability performance over 15 years or more with EarthCheck, with independent audits all the way through.
GCCEC, which was just pipped at the post to become the world’s first EarthCheck Master certified convention centre by Adelaide Convention Centre, has been working with – and benchmarked by – EarthCheck for 17 years.
“Sustainability is at the heart of how we operate,” said GCCEC’s general manager, Nick Jeffrey.
“Achieving EarthCheck Master status for another year reflects the shared effort of our entire team, who make sustainability a part of how we do business.
“Phase two of our five-year sustainability strategy is now underway, focusing on practical initiatives that reduce waste, improve efficiency and create lasting benefits for our people, partners and community.”
EarthCheck’s CEO and founder, Stewart Moore, praised the convention centre’s achievement.
“Achieving and maintaining EarthCheck Master Certification demonstrates more than operational excellence, it showcases a culture of progress, accountability and genuine care for people and place,” said Moore.
Sustainability measures put in place by the venue include switching the majority of its lighting to energy efficient LED fixtures, using compostable food and beverage utensils to reduce plastic waste, using recycled water where possible and adopting waste management and separation policies that have seen 60 per cent of waste at the centre diverted from landfill. The centre also sets targets every year to continue reducing energy, carbon, water and waste.
More client-facing sustainability initiatives include a carbon calculator, launched in 2024, and a sustainable event checklist for clients.
