Western Australia wins global carbon capture conference
The 18th Greenhouse Gas Control Technology Conference (GHGT-18) will be held in Perth in 2026.

The meeting attracts researchers, government, businesses and others in the industry of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) as a way of reducing the greenhouse gases responsible for climate change.

The biennial conference is expected to attract more than 1,000 delegates when it is held in WA for the first time. It was last held in Australia in 2018 in Melbourne and was also hosted by Cairns in 2000.

GHGT-18 is being co-hosted by Australian Energy Producers, the nation’s peak body for energy producers, including oil, gas and lower-emission fuel, alongside CSIRO, CO2CRC and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

“We are pleased to co-host GHGT-18 and showcase the Australian oil and gas sector’s CCUS leadership on the world stage,” said Australian Energy Producers’ CEO, Samantha McCulloch.

“Australia has two of the largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects operating globally – Chevron’s Gorgon Project and the Santos and Beach Energy joint venture Moomba Project.

“These projects are today storing emissions equivalent to taking one million cars off the road each year.

“CCUS is a key technology in efforts to reach net zero in Australia and the region.

“The International Energy Agency, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and CSIRO have all found that there is no pathway to net zero without CCUS,” she said.

“The conference provides an important opportunity to highlight growing momentum for CCUS in Australia and around the world, as well as the future opportunities for this key emissions reduction technology.

“It is fitting the event will be held in WA – a state where industry and government are leading the way on CCUS in Australia.”

Business Events Perth is supporting the conference, with its CEO, Gareth Martin, flagging the broad benefits of conferences such as this one.

“Securing GHGT-18 is a testament to Western Australia’s growing reputation as a premier destination for high-impact international business events,” he said.

“GHGT-18 will serve as a catalyst for collaboration and knowledge exchange, continuing to position Western Australia as a global destination for valuable business events that attract high yield business travellers.”
