Wellington’s reputation as a city of innovation has received a big boost after winning US$1m in a global contest.
The capital was awarded the prize money as one of 15 cities worldwide to win the Bloomberg Mayors Challenge, a competition that recognises the boldest, most ambitious innovations to address issues like climate change, economic recovery from COVID-19, health and equality.
The accolade was for a digital recreation of Wellington which aims to educate people about climate change and will assist better decision-making on how the city grows.
It highlights not only Wellington’s innovative nature, but also the fact that the capital is a connected and collaborative city with big ambition.
Described as a sophisticated hub of industry and culture, the vibrant, energetic city is indeed a place of innovation where forward-thinking and decision-making come naturally.
As the political and geographic centre of New Zealand and recently recognised as one of the 21 places of the future by Cognizant, the compact capital is using business events to catalyse growth across the destination’s key industries including creative technology, GovTech and FinTech.
The recent collaboration with the New Zealand Game Developers Association (NZGDA) in a multi-year event deal is one example of how events can help industry sectors grow and diversify.
With the support of the city, the association is anchoring its annual conference in Wellington from 2022 and expanding its remit to incorporate the film, screen and interactive media sectors alongside its traditional gaming content.
It’s a move that will encourage economic investment and benefit the creative digital content sector, thereby further strengthening Wellington’s position as a world leader in these fields.
The event’s eventual home will be in Wellington’s new convention and exhibition centre Tākina. Construction is well on track for the purpose-built building, due to open next year.
