AUSTRALIA FORGES AHEAD IN RANKINGS
Despite tougher global competition Australia has not only retained its standing among the top 20 countries for hosting international meetings but strengthened its position, climbing from 19th to 13th in the annual International Congress & Convention Association rankings.
According to ICCA Australia hosted 253 meetings that fit its stringent criteria in 2012 – 49 more than 2011.
Sydney was named Australia’s number one city, hosting 86 meetings, up from 34th position (57 meetings) in 2011. Melbourne slipped from 31st place in 2011 (62 meetings) to 39th (54 meetings) while Brisbane shot up 31 places to rank 56th, hosting 40 meetings (compared to 24 in 2011).
Perth now ranks 100th best in the world, hosting 22 meetings, after ranking 132nd in 2011 (hosting 16 meetings).
Other Australian cities on the list include Cairns (134th place with 17 meetings), Adelaide (142nd place with 16 meetings), Canberra (263rd place with eight meetings), and the Gold Coast (286th place with seven meetings).
The top five in the world were: USA (833 meetings), Germany (649 meetings), Spain (550 meetings), UK (477 meetings), and France (469 meetings).
China slipped from eighth to 10th despite hosting more meetings in 2012 (311) than it did in 2011 (302).

The Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), established by the Ministry of Tourism, announces another bid win for the country recently – the Meetings & Events Australia (MEA) Annual National Conference 2014. The announcement was made at the closing ceremony of the MEA Annual Conference 2013 in Darwin. MEA 2014 will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from May 15 to 17. This marks the first time the conference is taking place in South East Asia and only the second time outside of Australia. It is expected to attract more than 600 delegates and is estimated to generate $2 million in economic impact for the country.
