The Sunshine Coast in Queensland and Devonport in Tasmania will both benefit from new internationally branded hotels in their destinations.

Avani Hotels to make Australian debut on the Sunshine Coast

Not long after celebrating the first new-build international hotel to enter its market in decades, with the opening of Holiday Inn Express & Suites Sunshine Coast, the Queensland region, located just an hour’s drive from Brisbane, can look forward to a second new-build international opening in 2025, with the debut of the Avani hotel brand in Australia in their backyard.

The Avani Mooloolaba Beach Hotel will offer 180 rooms 100m from Mooloolaba Beach, alongside four restaurants, an entire floor for events and a rooftop pool, bar and event space with 180-degree water views. One of the restaurants will also be located on the rooftop level.

“We have been keen to add an Avani hotel into our Australian portfolio for some time and have been scouting for a first-class location,” said Dillip Rajakarier, group CEO of Minor International and CEO of Minor Hotels, which owns the Avani brand.

“We feel confident this property ticks all the boxes for travellers seeking the upscale, contemporary experience offered by our international Avani Hotels & Resorts, and we expect it will be extremely well received within the Australian market.”

Minor already operates the Oaks brand in Australia with 56 properties in that portfolio. There are also four Avani Residences properties open in Australia.

The Avani hotels brand operates on several continents including Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

Novotel Devonport coming online in 2022

In Tasmania, construction on the 187-room Novotel Devonport is nearing completion, with the hotel slated to open in the final quarter of this year.

The new hotel will provide a major boost to Devonport’s burgeoning credentials as a conferencing destination, following the opening of its convention centre in 2018.

The city’s paranaple convention centre offers space for 800 pax in theatre or 450 in banquet configuration. The new Novotel will be just three minutes’ walk from the venue.

“The presence of this popular international brand will expose Devonport and the greater northern Tasmania region to a broader market and contribute to the region’s ability to attract major conferences, events and groups,” said Accor Pacific CEO Sarah Derry.

“Novotel Devonport’s offering will be tailored to suit smart, successful business and leisure travellers who value great guest service and leading design.”

Located on Tasmania’s north coast, Devonport has its own airport, serviced by Qantas flights, and is also home to the Spirit of Tasmania, which travels between Victoria and Devonport seven times a week. The Victorian port for the Spirit of Tasmania will move from Melbourne to Geelong in October this year.
