Save NSW Events, a collaboration formed to support the state’s events industry through the Covid-19 crisis, has released the results from its first survey exploring the impact of the global pandemic on local industry people and businesses.

The survey was conducted between February 16 and 23, 2021, and more than 620 responses were collected, including individuals and companies responsible for supplying AV, audio, lighting, theming, expo, marquees, catering and more.

Founder of Save NSW Events and general manager of Audio Visual Events Paul Keating described the results as “devastating” and urged the industry to express their concerns to their local MPs.

The results were as follows:

NSW event industry companies

Income from April to December 2020 was down 82 per cent.

Forecast income for January to June 2021 is down 75 per cent.

Forecast income for July to December 2021 is down 66 per cent.

98.3 per cent of companies are currently receiving JobKeeper.

JobKeeper has enabled

52 per cent of companies to keep all staff on.

42 per cent of companies to keep some staff on.

If JobKeeper ends in March

45 per cent of companies will need to let staff go

An additional 42 per cent of companies will potentially need to close their business

87 per cent of event companies in NSW will be severely affected by the ending of JobKeeper if it is not replaced by some other form of financial support.

Impact on freelancers and contractors

These include professional service providers such as producers, production managers, stage managers, technicians, risk managers, lighting designers etc.

Income from April to December 2020 was down 87 per cent.

Forecast income for January to June 2021 is down 77 per cent

Forecast income for July to December 2021 is down 66 per cent.

61 per cent have had to seek work outside of the event industry to survive.

75 per cent will need to get jobs outside of the event industry if JobKeeper ends in March.

Impact on NSW event industry workers

Only 26 per cent of people who were working full-time in the NSW event industry pre-Covid are still working full-time in the event industry.

59 per cent of people have had to seek work outside of the event industry with 31 per cent of their income coming from work outside the event industry.

Optimism for the NSW event industry

The NSW events industry advised that their level of optimism is a level of three out of 10 for the coming year.
