Move over Sydney and Melbourne, Canberra is pulling rank in the foodie stakes.

Determined to change out-dated perceptions of Canberra, IHG recently hosted a group of event-planners on a two-day food and wine tour around the capital.

Delegates were treated to an exclusive lunch in the Member and Guest Dining Room at Parliament House, where local produce and refined elegance were on display. Culinary highlights included truffled quail egg canapés, a creamy oyster sorbet, and a decadent three-layered chocolate cheesecake for dessert.

After a moving Last Post ceremony at the Australian War Memorial, delegates checked into Crowne Plaza Canberra before heading to the National Convention Centre for a roaming cocktail dinner reception and a night of comedy with Dave Hughes’ live show ‘Pointless’ at NCC’s Royal Theatre.

The following morning, delegates braced the winter chill and joined local truffle farmer, Sherry McArdle-English, to hunt for black gold – that’s the elusive French black truffle Sherry has been cultivating on her 10-year-old estate in Majura, just 15 minutes from Canberra city. Following Snuffle the truffle dog through the young forest of oak trees, delegates watched in awe as the highly-trained canine located the distinct truffle scent and uncovered a whopping 320gr truffle – the biggest of the season so far. As the thrill of the hunt continued, delegates learnt about the history of black truffles in the region, while touching, sniffing, and tasting the truffle.

Winter truffle hunts can be teamed with a truffle, cheese and wine tasting at the neighbouring Mount Majura Vineyard and make for a great incentive or partner program.

Throughout the region’s annual Truffle Festival (June-August), there’s also a host of cooking classes and dining experiences that corporate groups can get involved in. As part of the IHG famil, delegates feasted on a long lunch at PodFood, where Sherry’s French Black Truffles of Canberra featured in all four courses – from truffle and cauliflower soup, to truffle-infused confit yolk with duck breast, and truffle-salted popcorn. m
