The New Zealand Open is set to return to Queenstown in 2014 and, in an announcement made earlier this month, will include the pro-am format successfully established for the 2013 NZPGA Championship.
Destination Queenstown chief executive Graham Budd said, “We wholeheartedly support the move to make Queenstown the hub for this new-format event and congratulate New Zealand Golf, the PGA of New Zealand and Michael Hill Tournaments Limited for their work and vision in pooling resources to form New Zealand’s premier golf tournament.
“This new combined event is a culmination of The Hills golf course successfully hosting three New Zealand Opens and two NZPGA Championships over the last six years. We’re also delighted that the potential for amateur and professional participation is expanding with the addition of Millbrook Resort as tournament co-host.”
Mr Budd said promoting Queenstown as a world-class golf destination has been a strong focus of the organisation for several years and hopes the 2014 tournament will raise the destination’s profile in key markets, particularly in Australia, Japan and further throughout Asia.
“The new partnership agreement between MHTL and the Japanese Golf Tour Organisation will enhance our profile in the Japanese market which is targeted by New Zealand’s tourism industry for growth,” he said.
