As Melbourne endures its second week of lockdown, there are ways event planners might be able to help ease the strain on impacted businesses through their purchasing power.
A post circulating on social media is encouraging everyone to buy gifts from Melbourne businesses and send them to those in the lockdown. From an event perspective, locally-sourced gifts to delegates of events cancelled during the lockdown and purchasing gifts for events in other states from Victoria could provide some relief to impacted businesses.
Additional federal and state government financial support has also been announced since Friday for businesses in lockdown.
On a state government level, support is specific to recovery from this lockdown with a $32.2 million tourism package announced which includes the release of 80,000 more regional tourism vouchers, and grants of up to $4,500 and $15,000 for tourism operators and alpine ski operators respectively.
On a federal level, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced an ongoing Temporary COVID-19 Disaster Payment for those affected by the current lockdown and future recurrences of longer than seven days. Individual workers who are impacted by any extended lockdown from the latest one in Melbourne onwards may be eligible for a payment of $500 per week.
