Independent hotel group Crystalbrook Collection is continuing to act on their tagline of “responsible luxury” with their latest initiative at the newly opened Crystalbrook Kingsley, Newcastle’s first five-star hotel.
The hotel in regional New South Wales has partnered with the University of Newcastle on research to understand how the property’s waste can be upcycled into items like coasters, beverage stirrers and complimentary guest items.
Crystalbrook Kingsley will give its restaurant and bar waste – including citrus peel and other fruit skins and pulps and ground coffee – to the university’s Food Science Research Group to see what they can make with it.
“The collaboration with University of Newcastle is an exciting one for Crystalbrook Collection,” says CEO of Crystalbrook Collection Geoff York.
“As we continue our commitment to sustainability, this partnership will see the development of practical solutions that reduce our environmental impact, while also introducing strategies that can be adopted worldwide.”
The hotel will also offer an environmental scholarship to the university’s students over the next four years. The winner of the scholarship will have an opportunity to work with Crystalbrook Kingsley on implementing practices which make the property more environmentally sustainable.
