NAME: Rebecca Kearney

BUSINESS NAME: The Events Centre, Caloundra

POSITION: Marketing coordinator

What are you working on right now in anticipation of a return of events?

Events are now back! We have a busy October with live music, comedy and dance. We are also securing some large events and functions. We are very lucky we have a large space to adapt to COVID restrictions.

What’s one lesson you have learnt during the COVID-19 lockdown period?

Adapting and moving forward is the only way forward. We worked hard to make sure we were COVID safe and the hard worked paid off, being one of the first venues to open their doors to patrons again.

What do you value more now than you may have pre-COVID-19?

Dancing! And patrons freely moving around the venue. We are kind of like traffic controllers now, but we would rather make sure our patrons are safe. And we feel for all the year 12 formals that aren’t able to dance. But they are still lucky enough that Qld government has let them have the sit down dinners.

How do you think events will change in the future?

COVID has highlighted the need for digital ways to accommodate larger crowds. We are now doing more online events or live streaming performances and events without live audiences.

Why are events important?

Our patrons in the Sunshine Coast community and beyond were extremely excited to come back to events and shows at the centre. It is important to provide a sense of belonging and support within that company or community event. And our performances are selling out the theatres!
