NAME: Lauren Sutherland
BUSINESS: Pacific Suites Canberra
POSITION: General manager
What are you working on right now in anticipation of a return of events?
Currently we are working on how we can collaborate with other local suppliers to present an authentic Canberra experience to all Pacific Suites event attendees. Our Pacific Hotels Care Policy has already been rolled out at the hotel level and will translate to events, ensuring the well-being of our staff, guests and community.
What’s one lesson you have learnt during the COVID-19 lockdown period?
We have learnt just how resilient and adaptable the Canberra community is. Changing business models nearly overnight is not something we thought we’d ever see, but just goes to show just how creative our industry professionals are.
How do you think events will change in the future?
We definitely value more now than ever supporting our local businesses and community, continuing our eco-warrior journey and creating lasting friendships – all of which are at the core of our Pacific Promise.
Why are events important?
COVID-19 has definitely changed the face of events in the future. There will be more reliance on connecting remotely, with less demand for all guests to be in one room. This may mean the same number of attendees spread out over a greater number of days, or it may mean limited numbers in person with a dial-in audience in diverse locations – it remains to be seen.
Events bring people together. We’ve seen the benefits of technology over the last few months but we all know deep down there’s nothing like connecting in person and collaborating at an event – we can’t wait for this to return!
