THAILAND – The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has inked a deal with the Royal Thai Government (on May 15) to hold the ITU Telecom World convention from November 19 to 22 and the Connect Asia-Pacific Summit on November 18 in Bangkok.
The former, which is expected to be attended by more than 10,000 foreign delegates, is among a host of prestigious events Thailand has won for this year, including a 4000-pax Nu Skin China incentive and a 1500-pax Herbalife Asia-Pacific incentive in Phuket, and a 6000-pax Perfect China incentive and a 3500-pax Amway India incentive in Pattaya
The prospects prompted the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau to adjust its 2013 target to a 10 per cent year-on-year increase, or 940,000 international MICE visitors and 88 billion baht from 792,000 travellers and 63.2 billion baht. Last year, Thailand attracted 895,224 international MICE visitors attending some 7382 events.
Sumate Sudasna, president of the Thailand Incentive and Convention Association – a private sector group, said he expected the international conference and incentive travel business to Thailand to grow by 15 per cent with a lot of groups from Asia Pacific, and anticipated events from long-haul markets to fully rebound from later this year.
Millennium Hilton Bangkok business development director Manu Koshy said the hotel also saw high interests from domestic and international conferences and business meetings, citing more than 100 corporate end users and industry planners attended its second annual meeting showcase last week (May 15-16).
