English Premier League giants, Liverpool FC, have announced they will tour Australia in July, kicking off their campaign in Queensland against the Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium.
The club’s visit to Brisbane in July marks the first time Liverpool FC has toured Queensland in their 123-year history.
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the Liverpool FC fixture against Brisbane Roar again highlighted Brisbane’s ability to stage major sporting events.
“Following world-class events such as the Brisbane International, AFC Asian Cup and ICC Cricket World Cup fixtures, Liverpool FC’s visit will once again showcase Brisbane as an international sporting events destination.
“I look forward to our city welcoming an influx of Liverpool FC fans and football supporters from across Australia and international destinations as we see Liverpool stars and our Brisbane Roar heroes take to the field at Suncorp Stadium,” he said.
Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) chief executive, Leanne Coddington, agreed, saying the win further built on Brisbane’s reputation as a premier events destination.
“High-profile events such as this play an important role in enhancing Queensland’s tourism profile and TEQ is proud to support Liverpool FC’s tour.
“The match will be a highlight among a fantastic sporting line up of events for Brisbane in 2015 which will be promoted as part of It’s Live! in Queensland.
Liverpool FC chief executive officer, Ian Ayre said: “We visited Australia for the first time two years ago and the support we received from our Australian fans was incredible.
“Liverpool FC has over 600,000 supporters in Australia and we look forward to meeting as many of them as possible while we are in the country.”
Liverpool FC’s tour to Queensland is supported by Tourism and Events Queensland, Brisbane Marketing, Brisbane Airport Corporation, Suncorp Stadium, AEG Ogden and Stadiums Queensland.
