April 1, 2022 | By Bronwen Largier | Tākina, Wellington’s new convention and exhibition centre is expected to open in mid-2023

Following the late 2021 announcement that the team behind the venue spaces at Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand, would manage Wellington’s new convention and exhibition centre Tākina when it opened in mid-2023, the two sets of venues will now operate under one brand, Tākina Events.

Te Papa, located across the road from the new convention centre, offers multiple venue spaces, with the largest having a normal capacity of 1,000 delegates. When Tākina opens next year, it will offer 10,000m2 of space across two purpose-built floors, including a plenary space for up to 1,600 people.

“What is already an exciting new asset for Wellington, combined with the venue spaces at Te Papa under one operation, now gives us an opportunity to deliver unique events on a scale the capital hasn’t seen before,” says Tākina Events General Manager Andrew Dorrington.

“And joining forces will help to support the promotion of the capital as a vibrant destination for hosting local and international events,” he says.

“With flexible spaces, built-in technology and celebrating local cuisine in the heart of Wellington, and one dedicated team to run the operation means clients – and delegates – benefit from a more efficient service across both buildings.”
