Townsville North Queensland could soon play host to more business and major events, potentially attracting millions of dollars in economic activity for the city through a collaborative project.
Townsville Enterprise general manager tourism and events, Patricia O’Callaghan and Cr Jenny Hill today announced the establishment of a cooperative bid fund which is a pool of funding used to entice eligible events to the region.
Townsville Enterprise Convention Bureau will manage the funding pool which has had contributions from Townsville City Council and equally matched funding by a State Government Grant through the Tourism and Events Queensland Contestable Grant Scheme for the Townsville North Queensland Events Marketing and Acquisition Project.
The fund also includes contributions from industry partners including Jupiter’s Townsville Hotel & Casino, Rydges Southbank Townsville, Mercure Townsville, Holiday Inn Townsville, and the Grand Hotel Townsville.
Townville Enterprise General Manager Tourism and Events, Patricia O’Callaghan, said the bid fund will raise the region’s competitiveness in bidding and acquiring new events and conferences to the region.
“This innovative initiative is designed to drive an increase in visitation and expenditure into the region and improve the awareness of Townsville North Queensland as a hub for events, conferences and meetings.”
“Events are at the forefront of the State Government’s 2020 Strategy as a key principle to create a reason for visitation and will provide a contribution to the economy, attract visitors, enhance the profile of the destination and foster community pride.”
Cr Hill said the campaign was an opportunity to build on the city’s reputation as an events capital.
“Townsville has built up a great track record as an events city,” Cr Hill said.
“Establishing a bid fund provides the means for the city through Townsville Enterprise to actively throw our hat in the ring for big events that will bring visitors here and deliver significant economic benefits for the city.”
“In the past we have missed out on opportunities to attract events that build economic and community capacity. This fund sets up a dedicated fund with tangible support from the business community to proactively pitch for events.”
