Serial hotel developer, plastic surgeon Dr Jerry Schwartz, has been revealed as the man behind a new 616-room $360 million Darling Harbour hotel that will be branded a Sofitel and open in 2017.
The announcement came today that Accor has signed a management agreement for the new ICC Hotel, with a timeline of opening just after the new convention centre at the end of 2016.
Accor Pacific COO, Simon McGrath, said the ICC Hotel is a milestone achievement for Sydney, and Accor is extremely proud to be selected to manage the property.
“We are thrilled that our long-standing relationship with Dr Schwartz continues to prosper and we are honoured to manage his latest hotel project which will be one of the largest luxury hotels in Australia.”
Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour forms part of the NSW Government’s $2.5 billion transformation of Darling Harbour, which includes the creation of Sydney’s new convention, exhibition and entertainment precinct.
“We applaud the NSW State Government on its redevelopment of a completely revitalised Darling Harbour which includes this innovative hotel. Once open, Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour will be a major tourism drawcard for not only Australians but travellers from all over the world,” Mr McGrath said.
Dr Schwartz said he believed the Sofitel branding of the hotel will help maximise the potential of the hotel asset.
Construction of the 35 storey Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour hotel is expected to start towards the end of 2014, and it is due for completion in the second quarter of 2017. It will feature a unique and instantly recognisable architectural design with 600 accommodation rooms to support the new ICC Sydney and Sydney’s growing accommodation demand.
