HERE I AM NOW!

BEN PATTEN
GENERAL MANAGER
MERCURE GROSVENOR HOTEL ADELAIDE

What did you want to be when you grew up: Captain of Liverpool Football Club. Your first job: Mowing lawns on the weekend with my grandfather. Your first pay packet: After I began working at KFC. Your first break: Being accepted for the two-year Accor National Management Traineeship. The year that I was accepted there were six people taken from all over the country. Describe your current role: Different every day. Hotels are an incredibly diverse business. Fortunately we have specialists working in most areas and my role is to ensure that they have an environment whereby we can deliver the best service and the best results possible. The best part of your job: To have a workplace as pleasant as a hotel with diverse, dynamic people and different situations every day. The worst: On occasion reading convoluted legal documents such as leases, economic reporting data and such. Who has inspired you: My grandfather inspired me in that he always advocated honesty, good intentions and tenacious delivery as the keys to success. Your best quality: Keeping many balls in the air at one time! I also think people respond positively to my sense of humour. Your worst quality: I can be a little fiery and I have very poor attention to detail. Your best achievement: Becoming a father, buying a house and securing my first general manager’s role all in 12 months. Where do you want to be in 10 years’ time: The general manager of a large corporate hotel in an Australia capital city.
