Meetings & Events Australia has developed a new education and professional development model for the events industry.
This model provides flexible learning in event management combining practical training from industry experts with online learning. The course is designed to enable students to manage their study around their work commitments.
Students from anywhere in Australia will have access to the learning tool. It allows you to study from your desktop or mobile device at your pace in your own time. You can study what you like when you like and allows students to pick and choose from a range of topics that can be studied individually or as part of the full Diploma of Event Management course.
The diploma course includes two day event management workshops addressing specific units scheduled every 10 weeks for students to either attend in person or via an online link. These workshops will be delivered by experts in the events industry to provide practical knowledge and share their experiences in working in the events industry. MEA will partner with key industry organisations to present these workshops to provide a broader range of event knowledge in specific sectors of the industry. These workshops will also be open to non-Diploma students, who wish to update their skills and gain knowledge on managing events from leading industry experts.
Meetings & Events Australia will include an annual membership subscription for all students enrolled in the diploma course. This membership will provide students access to a wide range of professional development presentations held across Australia at discounted rates. These events will allow students to network and build relationships within the industry that will further support and perhaps open doors for them to achieve their career goals.
Students will be supported by an experienced trainer who will guide and assist them in completing the course.
Recent findings of the Australian Workplace Skills Shortage Survey of the Events Industry, organised by MEA, highlighted that there was a large skills gap in the sector for experienced event managers at both the mid and senior levels. While there are large numbers of young event professionals entering the events sector, they are leaving after a few years. The survey quoted a number of factors that identified why this is occurring including the long hours and low levels of pay, but one of the key factors was a perceived lack of a career path.
Meetings & Events Australia recently confirmed its registration until 2024 as a trainer provider from the Australian Skills Quality Authority and has developed a career pathway for students entering the events industry.
School students interested in event management can undertake the online Meetings Essential introductory course that gives them a taste of what is required to be an event manager.
Meetings & Events Australia offers the new online SIT50316 Diploma of Event Management to deliver students a formal qualification while working in the industry.
In addition to these learning resources, MEA offers young event professionals access to a national Mentor Program to help guide them to support their career aspirations. MEA partners with Ungerboeck Software Systems to offer a young professionals scholarship in each state and territory to attend the National MEA Conference where they benefit from networking with the industry and attending a program of high level professional and personal development presentations.
Meetings & Event Australia also offers an accreditation program to promote event managers that demonstrate a high level of knowledge and experience in managing events.
MEA will work with other industry training organisations to ensure that every events industry sector has access to high quality training and to ensure professional development is strengthened and continually updated to meet changing demands.
With the recent focus on vocational training, it is critical that, as the events industry’s peak body, MEA continues to create and deliver vocational education and training for the Australian events sector that keeps professional standards high to ensure long term sustainability.
