The Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine was held recently at the Cairns Convention Centre. Opened by the former Governor General Dame Quentin, more than 400 specialists attended from all over Australia, New Zealand, SE Asia and beyond.
With so many experts from around the world, local geriatrician, Dr Eddy Strivens said the meeting was a great opportunity for the region to provide a backdrop for innovation and research in Geriatric Medicine. It is estimated the meeting brought an estimated $2 million economic benefit to the region.
Conference Convenor, Brisbane based Geriatrician Dr Robert O’Sullivan said, “The theme of this year’s meeting is to showcase the intersection of gender and ageing and to look at how and why women and men age differently. Heading the line-up of distinguished speakers are Professor Thomas Perls from the University of Boston, one of the world’s foremost experts on longevity and Professor Jean Woo from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a pioneer of Geriatric Medicine in Asia.”
