In an effort to target Australia’s conference and incentive business, Business Events Wellington has appointed a business development manager based in Sydney: Tania Barnes. Tania starts the role today, bringing to it a wealth of business events experience that started 20 years ago on Hamilton Island.

In light of this exciting update, we had a chat with Tania about what Wellington has to offer, the opportunities and challenges ahead and what her role will involve.

When did you start?

Kia ora – I start TODAY!  Nothing like jumping in the deep end on my first day.

Where were you previously?

I have spent the past three years with Millennium Hotels & Resorts, and before that SkyCity Auckland Convention Centre, so have a firm knowledge of New Zealand and her beauty to create amazing business events.

What challenges do you expect in this new role and how will you overcome them?

The only challenge I can see is the fact I cannot jump on a flight and head straight to Wellington to meet all the amazing suppliers that support the city. Other than that, all I can see is opportunity!

And what opportunities are they?

Initially I see the opportunity, with COVID restrictions in place, to ensure Wellington becomes the New Zealand hub for all Australian hybrid meetings looking to host a satellite conference for their New Zealand delegates, specifically in the association sector. Moving forward past the restrictions, the development of Tākina (the new Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre) and ongoing infrastructure improvements to the city itself will ensure each event is unique, easy to navigate and showcases the “coolest little capital in the world.”

What does Wellington offer that other destinations do not?

Wellington is both the cosmopolitan and governmental hub of New Zealand. With excellent accessibility and a huge range and scale of venues, the city is able to host both action-packed incentives or major conferences/exhibitions. Being the capital city and home to the New Zealand government and major business and associations, high-level speakers and industry experts are at your fingertips.

Would you like to make any other comment?

I am so excited to be showcasing such an exciting destination and am really looking forward to borders opening and sharing these experiences with the Australian business events market.
